Trauma
Patient Care
The Chief Resident on the Trauma service should demonstrate the ability to:
- Supervise all aspects of the care of Trauma patients
- Formulate the diagnostic and therapeutic plan for patients having any traumatic injury
- Direct supervision of junior residents, medical student and coordination of nursing, social services and administration to optimize patient care
- Assist faculty with supervision of the clinics
- Participate in the development of the treatment plan for all patients undergoing trauma care on the Surgery Service
- Perform the following procedures:
- Thoracotomy
- Laparotomy
- Laparoscopic Procedures in the Abdomen & Thorax
- ACLS & ATLS Protocols
Medical Knowledge
The Chief Resident on the Trauma service should understand:
- Critically evaluate published literature regarding the diseases managed on the Trauma service and formulate an evidenced-based therapeutic plan
- Analyze the surgical complications on the service, and present them at the Trauma M&M’s in a constructive and educational manner
- Take considerable initiative in facilitating the education of junior housestaff and medical students
- Apply clinical trials data to patient management
- Lead academic and clinical discussions
- Attend and actively participate, and direct teaching conferences as needed
Practice Based Learning and Improvement
The Chief Resident on the Trauma service should demonstrate the ability to:

- Establish and maintain professional and therapeutic relationships with patients and healthcare team members
- Manage and maintain efficiency of the team
- Effectively counsel patients regarding options for surgical and non-surgical therapies
- Demonstrate behaviors that reflect an ongoing commitment ot continuous professional development, ethical practice, sensitivity to diversity and responsible attitudes
Professionalism
The Chief Resident on the Trauma service should:
- Demonstrate commitment to their patients superseding personal self-interests, including readiness to provide bedside and operative care to the patients irrespective of time of day
- Demonstrate sensitivity to age, gender and culture of patients and other healthcare professionals
- Actively seed and be receptive to feedback on performance
- Be involved in end-of-life discussions and decisions
- Demonstrate leadership
Systems Based Practice
The Chief Resident on the Trauma service should:
- Demonstrate the ability to efficiently and effectively organize the care of the surgical and non-surgical patient in a cost-effective and evidenced-based manner
- Appropriately recruit other specialists and healthcare professionals to optimize the efficiency of care of the surgical patient
- Be sensitive to medical-legal issues
- Have information technology/computer resources available
