Cardio-Thoracic Surgery

Patient Care
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Supervise all aspects of the care of general surgery patients
  • Formulate the diagnostic and therapeutic surgical plan for patients having any of the common thoracic diseases including (lung cancer, valve disease, and coronary artery disease)
  • Perform with supervision the following procedures:
    1. Thoracoscopy
    2. Thoracotomy
    3. Wedge Resection of Lung

Medical Knowledge
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should understand:

  • The natural history of coronary disease and lung neoplasia
  • The indications for radiographic evaluation of common surgical diseases
  • The optimal management of common thoracic surgical problems
  • Non-invasive and invasive evaluation of diseases of the chest and mediastinum

Practice Based Learning and Improvement
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Critically evaluate published literature regarding the diseases managed on the Surgery Service, and formulate evidenced-based therapeutic plan
  • Analyze the surgical complications in patients on the service in which he or she have been involved, and present them at the Surgical M&M’s in a constructive and education manner

Interpersonal and Communication Skills
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should demonstrate the ability to:

  • Demonstrate commitment to the surgery patients superseding personal self-interests, including readiness to provide bedside and operative care to the transplant surgery patients irrespective of time of day
  • Recognize potential conflicts between the surgery team and nursing staff, and productively intervene to optimize the care of the patient
  • Use current medical literature to support the projected plan of care in the face of possible disagreements from other medical teams
  • Take considerable initiative in facilitating the learning of junior housestaff and medical students

Professionalism
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should:

  • Collegially interact with the faculty and other members of the care team in formulating and instituting therapeutic plans
  • Effectively counsel the patients regarding options for care

Systems Based Practice
The PGY-4 Resident on the Thoracic Surgery service should:

  • Demonstrate the ability to efficiently and effectively organize the care of the surgical patient in a cost-effective and evidenced-based manner
  • Appropriately recruit other specialists and healthcare professionals to optimize the efficiency of care of the surgery patient
