HUNTINGTON HOSPITAL

PGY2 Residency Program

Emergency Medicine Pharmacy Practice

This specialty residency in Emergency Medicine (EM) Pharmacy Practice is a 12-month intensive training program that will prepare the resident to establish and provide clinical pharmacy services in an Emergency Department (ED). Responsibilities of the EM pharmacy resident will include provision of direct patient care in the ED including, consultative and bedside care for emergent and urgent pharmacotherapeutic and toxicologic problems, evaluation and assessment of drug-related problems, drug-induced disease states, and discharge counseling. The resident is a key source of drug information for physicians, nurses and patients, as well as investigation and reporting of adverse drug events for ED patients.

The resident will have approximately 7 months in the ED and the remaining months in other directly related areas such as Medical, Surgical, Pediatric, and Neonatal Intensive Care. The resident will have flexibility to develop and tailor this residency toward their specific goals and interests. Other potential rotations at Huntington include: Emergency Medical Services / Pre-Hospital Care, Infectious Diseases, Pediatrics, Hematology / Oncology, Cardiology, and Ambulatory Care. The resident will be certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and respond to cardiac and respiratory arrests.

The resident will serve as a preceptor for clerkship students and PGY1 residents rotating through the ED. A number of ED-related projects will be assigned and completed throughout the year, including a year-long research project and manuscript for publication.

The residency does not have an additional staffing requirement, however, due to the nature of Emergency Medicine the resident must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule including evening and weekend shifts.

The overall goal of the residency will be to develop competent emergency medicine pharmacy practitioners with an emphasis on clinical knowledge, administrative, research and teaching skills necessary for independent emergency medicine pharmacy practice. Huntington Hospital pharmacy residency programs are designed to give residents optimum independence in a supportive, state-of-the-art environment, allowing self-structuring for highly motivated individuals.
